* * * *

Toby tried to focus on the road ahead, but every couple of minutes, his eyes wondered toward Thomas. After glancing at the demon, he looked back at the road before Thomas noticed. What am I doing? Toby asked himself. He’d been asking that questions since this morning and he still didn’t have an answer.

He was walking on a thin wire, struggling to keep his balance as the world shook. Right now, Thomas was the one rattling his world. So many things had changed in twenty-four hours. Yesterday morning, he was curled up shaking on the floor and now he rode in the car with his lover. Maybe lover wasn’t the right word. Sex friend or maybe fuck buddy. Lover was too intimate of a term. Toby felt the connection, but to Thomas it was a casual encounter. That hurt. But he didn’t know why.

Thomas had changed things. The obnoxious demon infuriated him. Every snide comment was worse than the one before. He unsettled Toby. Before meeting Thomas, he never imagined a man so self-confident. He wasn’t even sure self-confident was a strong enough word. He was so full of himself, a quality Toby loathed. His blood boiled with anger, but he still wanted Thomas. And that confused him. Everything that happened last night confused him. He didn’t regret it, but he still wondered why he didn’t send Thomas away. Why didn’t he run away? The truth was simple, but hard to accept. Toby wanted to hold Thomas and to be held by him. He longed for the other man’s touch. There was an attraction that he couldn’t fight.

“What are you thinking about?” Thomas asked.

“Nothing.” The response was crisp and instant, almost cutting off the demon. He bit the end of his glove with his teeth.

“Really?” Thomas questioned. “Your foot is tapping against the floor. And you’ve looked at me at least three times in the last minute and let out a heavy sigh each time you turned away. Which is very rude.”

Toby moved both hands down and pressed them into his knee, willing the treacherous foot to stop tapping against the floor. The nervous energy and building anxiety wanted out and his foot started moving again. Damn. He pressed both hands harder into his thigh. He waited as the leg stilled. Satisfied that he solved at least one problem, Toby jutted his chin up and away from Thomas.

Thomas slapped one knee and laughed. It took the demon a good minute to regain control. “Why are you nervous?” He chuckled again. “We’re beyond being uncomfortable around each other. Last night, I got to know you better than anyone else.” Thomas reached over and squeezed Toby’s thigh. “Besides, nothing’s going to happen while I’m by your side.”

The words meant nothing. Toby turned away. He hated lies and liars. If things got bad, Thomas would leave. No one would hang around to deal with his baggage. Thomas was no different. While the demon proclaimed them mates, Toby wasn’t stupid or gullible.
